Stomaphy X
StomaphyX™ is a surgical procedure that does not require an incision. This procedure will create folds in the tissue of the gastrointestinal tract to reduce the size of your stomach.
In most cases, StomaphyX™ is done as revision surgery after a gastric bypass, to resize the pouch of the stomach and the connection to the Roux limb if it has stretched out. StomaphyX™ is an outpatient surgery, with a possible post operative admission, and is done under general anesthesia.
What to Expect During the Procedure
There are no incisions with the StomaphyX™, which allows for a faster recovery time, without the unsightly scars. The StomaphyX™ device is gently lowered into your mouth, guided through your esophagus, and into your stomach. The board certified bariatric surgeon, here at Arizona Weight Loss Solutions, will watch the device on an endoscope video. The handpiece has a suction port, which allows for your bariatric surgeon to create folds, also known as plications, in the tissue, to resize the stomach. Tiny polypropylene fasteners (a non-absorbable material) will hold the folds in place. The fasteners are made of the same material as traditional suture material.
The benefit to this procedure is the narrow passageway in your stomach, which allows you to feel fuller faster, and for a longer period of time. It can simulate the restriction that was present just after the original bypass.
What to Expect After the Procedure
Following surgery, it is common for you to feel discomfort in your throat, nose, and chest. This will dissipate in a few days. Your restrictions over the next few weeks may include but are not limited to: heavy lifting, pulling, or pushing. You should refrain from any physical activity for the next week.
The post procedure diet will be similar to the diet after the original bypass. It is important to continue a full liquid diet for four weeks to allow the plications to heal fully. Once you are fully healed, you can advance to a puree diet for two more weeks.
The risks of this procedure are only a fraction of the risk in the original bypass. This is the chance to get back on track with our bariatric surgery program that includes coaching with nutrition, diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and behavior modification with our team of professionals.
